From Then to Now and Back Again

Look for an update early 2006

Hello All,
Hope you all had a GREAT Thanksgiving, we did.
We had a great time at HARRY'S, always do. It's always better when you're there with us. (photos to the right).

I'm working on next year's celebration. As I asked Eva Tree on Friday, which tomorrow do you mean?  I received a lot of bird gifts.  Eva says that means I’m a songbird set to soar...

A couple days back I told you I’m going to be going "off line" pretty much the rest of the month, maybe longer.  I need to regroup and get organized with all this new software and my website.  You know, my website has only been up since October 26.  We added the counter November 2 and have had 1335 as of this writing.  Thanks.

Even More Glad Tidings from Larry: SLIP AWAY is at number 1 for the second week!

Check it out here: http://www.indieworldcountry.com

Deck the halls!

Glad tidings from Larry Hosford:

BIG NEWS!  The song "Slip Away" from Lacy J. Dalton’s CD "The Last Wild Place" has recently been licensed for use in the upcoming film called "Raising the Dead" starring Alison Eastwood (Clint Eastwood’s daughter).

The film centers on a restaurant manager (Alison Eastwood) whose reunion with her siblings at their father's funeral brings out a dark secret. "Slip Away" will be featured in a scene where Eastwood’s character is driving down the freeway listening to the radio. "Slip Away" continues to be the sleeper hit on the album and is now in the Top 10 of the Indie World Country Top 40 chart:IndieWorldCountry.com.”

This is news because "Slip Away" is a tune co-written by Larry Hosford and a fella named John Fitzgerald.  Lyrics below and check out Larry’s picture on the Musicians page of my website: http://www.barbarabuckland.com/musicians.html.  You might see someone there you are.  I had such a cool time w/Larry in Aptos, CA in late September.  Another example of answering "What if."

For those who are new to this list and may not know, Larry Hosford is an Alt-Country songwriter from Salinas, CA.  He is a big hero of mine and I recently found him on the Internet.  Then, through a series of events I found myself driving a car to California in late September (instead of flying as I had planned), had the foresight to bring every girls’ best friend, a mini disc recorder with me, emails were exchanged, and I got to hang out w/Larry and his band, friends, and assorted characters in Aptos, CA.  Aptos is near Santa Cruz.  Got over three hours of recordings.  Larry is a MAJOR talent.  HUGE.

PK Dwyer played the Hopvine Monday.  He told me that “Vintage Guitar” Magazine did an interview with him for its November 1, 2004 issue.  Check it out on PK’s site:  .  PK is always doing something different!  I booked him into the Hopvine w/Daddy Treetops for late February.  Exact date doesn’t get any later in February, in fact.
The annual Grammy meeting was great.  Technology will be a featured topic at a soon-to-be-announced seminar.  Check the website:  Grammy.com

Steve Turnidge was present.  Steve is the founder of  Weed Files, an alternative distribution network that is fast becoming mainstream.  Growing like a… I had suggested to the Weedshare ahoo Group w while back that T-shirts would be nice (made out of hemp) and Steve says they’re on the way.  I want mine to be long sleeve.  Here’s a great interview with Steve.

All For You

© 2005 Barbara Buckland

Climb a mountain, swim the sea Build a guitar just for me
Sing a sweet song - you know the kind
Something easy on the mind

1st Chorus:
And let the days of sweet deception melt away like winter snow
Life is born on springtime meadows where glories and wild roses grow
Sing a song of jubilation giving thanks where it's due
Springtime meadows, precious flowers - all for you.

Verse:
Now it's springtime new life is here
Laughter and music fills the air
It's just the kind of day I'd like to share
And I look around and see that you are there.

2nd Chorus:
And let the days of sweet deception melt away like winter
Life is born on springtime meadows where stories and wild suposes grow
Sing a song of jubilation giving thanks where it's due
Springtime meadows, precious hours, all for you

Verse:
Our lives are always young, time takes us riding
You might never be back here at my side
Still there are paths to us so easy to find
It's a feeling growing easy on the mind.

Repeat 1st Chorus

Addendum, April 9, 2005

I received Lacy J. Dalton's CD "The Last Wild Place" December 6, 2004. I began listening to it again last week, again, in the car driving in the rain. It was so perfect.

I've posted some lyrics below.

Listen to the Wind
Lacy J. Dalton

"The Last Wild Place"

Had a lover out in Santa Cruz
But I left him to sing the blues
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
Thought that I'd left love behind
But love is just a state of mind
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind

Listen to the wind and the drivin' rain
Listen close and you'll hear 'em say
That what goes 'round
Will come around again
Listen to the wind

I made a lot of music and it got me high
But Nashville left me high and dry
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
I got so cold I almost froze
But something whispered to my soul
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind

Listen to the wind and the drivin' rain
Listen close and you'll hear 'em sayin'
That what goes 'round
Will come around again
Listen to the wind

Everybody needs somebody to see them through
Everybody needs someone like I need you — I need you

The Sixties came, the Sixties went:
We let the court appoint a president
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
This old world's wild she won't be tamed,
The only thing you can trust is change
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind

Listen to the wind and the drivin' rain
Listen close and you'll hear 'em say
That what goes 'round
Will come around again
Listen to the wind

Everybody needs somebody to see them through
Everybody needs someone like I need you — I need you

Had a lover out in Santa Cruz
But I left him to sing the blues
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
(There's going to come a time in your life when you think
you've reached the end . . . and that will be the beginning)
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind
Listen to the wind — listen to the wind

Heart of Hearts (Stay Open)

Lacy J. Dalton

"The Last Wild Place"
http://www.lacyjdalton.com/The-Last-Wild-Place-Songs.htm

When these neon cities bring you down
Heart of Hearts stay open
When you’re lost and lonely in a crowd
Heart of Hearts stay open

When you cannot find someone to love
Heart of Hearts stay open
There is just one way to rise above
Heart of Hearts stay open

When the world and all her sorrows
Seems to bind you
And you feel as if your dreams
Are caving in
When you fear that all your good years
Are behind you
Look within – Look within

When you’ve lost the will to carry on
Heart of Hearts stay open
There’s a greater strength to lean upon
Heart of Hearts stay open

‘Cause all the King’s horses, angels and men
Are all hopin’ – We’re all hopin’
Heart of Hearts stay open

When the last wild place is trampled down
Heart of Hearts stay open
There’s a free wild space where grace abounds
Heart of Hearts stay open

When the world and all her sorrows
Seems to bind you
And you feel as if your dreams
Are caving in
When you fear that all your good years
Are behind you
Look within – Look within

‘Cause all the King’s horses, angels and men
Are all hopin’ – We’re all hopin’
Heart of Hearts stay open

-- In the Starlight  © 1989 Barbara Buckland --

He said, “Promise me we’ll always be wild.”
She looked into his eyes and smiled
But it was hard to see why in the starlight.
She said, “Come and take a walk with me
There’s something I’d like you to see
And it’s beautiful tonight in the starlight

They set out for a walk downtown
Christmas lights up downtown
Shoppers in a rush to catch the holiday sales
In front of an expensive store
Close to its welcoming doors
Well-dressed women panhandling to “Save the Whales.”
And after each donation they give thanks
Charity you can take to the bank
Children put dollar bills on the table…

Further back in a doorway
Out of the wind and out of the way
The war’s left him without a leg to stand on
No one will even pause
They need a less threatening cause
His empty beggar’s combat hat seems abandoned.
The women work the crowd
Laws prevent the man from soliciting out loud
So his begging sign goes unread
Though by the light of the lamp overhead it said
No money, no home, no job, no food:  I’m a veteran; I’m disabled.”
The women talk of their coffers grown
The man fades into the night alone
The moon chisels his face to stone
It’s the same light playing catch
Making the metal from his medals match
The silver streaks streaming down his cheeks
But the tragedy’s lost just like so many things are in the starlight.

They put a five in his hat and moved on
Aware of dignity eclipse and then gone
He said, “is compassion free does it carry a toll?”
Poverty isn’t a crime
Being poor is like doing time
The days stretch on with no hope for parole
A cell of despair imprisons a soul
It’s a question of respect
And one of neglect
It’s cut crystal clear in the starlight
What is need and what is greed
World far from pure
When the human lines blur
What we give what we endure
Cause and cure
Between you and me
It’s not that hard to see
But there’s no black and white
Only gray in the starlight.

Excerpt from a nightmare --
Awakening me
Easter Sunday Morning,
4-11-2004

I was talking with a friend
Which one
I could not see
The sky
Dark and turbulent
I looked above
A public transportation bus
Hurtling through space
Sideways
How high
I could not tell

Faces in the windows visible
Faintly
Features obscured by distance
Their trinkets and life pursuits
Values
Loved ones
Meaningless to them now
Or of utmost importance
Which
I could not know

I looked down and to my left
A
Huge
Funnel cloud
Rife with chaos
Malevolent
Blackening the sky
Hurling debris
Fast our way
I screamed to my friend
"Look
Run..."

Suddenly

I was in that tree
The one I love so much in Discovery Park
The one that helps me
Stay grounded
Make life-altering decisions
Weather personal storms

Crouched in its crook
Hanging on for life
Huddling
Clinging with all my strength

Again

Seeking its protection
Soaking and wind-torn
Shaken and frozen
Broken-hearted in the destruction
Terrified by the howl
The scream

The tornado
Twisted back and forth
Ripping

A swath of devastation
Crisscrossing
Seeking every side
Behind it

A path of despair

Yet it spared me
And
Somehow
I knew
My friends

For now
For Katie.  This was our first Thanksgiving without her
She died Mother's Day, 2004, but stayed with us
until the following Thursday.  We're grateful for that.
There were twelve of us with her when she left;
she touched countless more. I'm grateful for the time we had
in California last February.  We love and miss her.

-- Blue Skies © 1998 Eva Tree --

The night was dark, there were no stars shining
Lightning struck and it found me here
I was so fearful I thought I was dying,
And it brought me to my knees

The rain poured down like rivers flowing
I dug my hands into the earth
With mud and leaves and water on me
I stumbled on a buried belief

Blue skies blue skies
Blue skies Blue
Heart of love, heart of joy
Turn all my grey skies to blue

Yes I was changed by the weather
I was washed clean by the eagle’s feather
And there’s no language, no words to tell you
How it turned all my grey skies to blue

So take of your skin and let the light shine in
Be the eyes of a child looking out from within
And don’t waste your time, don’t waste your heart
Don’t bruise your heels running in the dark

Blue skies blue skies
Blue skies Blue
Heart of darkness heart of fear
I won’t I won’t choose you
‘cus I can feel it

Blue skies blue skies
Blue skies Blue
Heart of love, heart of joy
Turn all my grey skies to blue

Turn all my grey skies to blue
Turn all my grey skies to blue

Sleepless Dreamers
by Bill White and Kelly Helga Edery de White

Beyond the fireworks of your smoky eyes
I am drinking the life of the hours
If I had a God like yours, I would say
I am with God but I am alone
I am with you but we are alone
Just two of the many
Sleepless dreamers

I’m on a lonely beach after sunset
Feeling the cold carpet of the wind
If I had a God like yours, I would say
I am lost in time just like a devil
Even the angels suffer the same
Still your voice makes its echo in the waves
Sleepless dreamers

Throwing stones into the sea
As if they were coins to buy back paradise lost
If I had a God like yours, I would say
Tomorrow will be the same
Tomorrow will be the same
For all of the ones like us
Sleepless dreamers

I am crossing with no glory
This finishing line of madness
If I had a God like yours, I would say
It is too sad Let’s follow the fog
What was I expecting on a river like this
Rolling head first into the abyss
With all the sleepless dreamers

Are you still here? Am I alone?
On this last dead of the day of hope
If I had a God like yours, I would say
Tomorrow will be the same
Tomorrow will be the same
Tomorrow nothing will be the same
For the sleepless dreamers

So here's the deal...This seminar program is for people who have always wanted to get up in front of an audience and perform but are unable to overcome the anxiety and overwhelming fear and panic that prevent them from doing so. It's not for those who just feal nervous before going on stage. Guess what? That's normal for even the most seasoned of performers. No, this is for the cold-sweat, white-knuckle, heart-pounding, "think I might pass out", "don't want to be here" crowd. I know what that's like. (I've been there). And I also know for a fact that for most of us it doesn't have to be that way. So what I'm going to do is share what worked for me and help you find what works for you. This is NOT a trial-by-fire, sink-or-swim approach. That doesn't work. Instead we will shesh up on the issue step by step, inch by inch, like we are trying to pet Bambi.

The first session you will mostly listen to me run my mouth and explain our approach. You will take some notes, learn some exercises and routines to work on for class 2. That 2nd class will have you doing your best to pair up with other participants and works some things, maybe play or perform a bit. Maybe not, it doesn't matter. It's all about forward momentum. The 3rd class is slated to be a "performance" setting. A small stage will be set up with mics and a PA. You may perform alone, with others, or not at all. Again, it doesn't matter, you're on your own schedule. To put it this way, throughout this whole thing, on a scared scale of 1 to 10, I don't even want you going past 5. Which is why you may, or may not, get up on stage at the end. But I do hope that you get farther than you thought that you could and realize that eventually you can do it.

This seminar is open to performers of any type, musicians, dancers, poets, public speakers, etc. Just don't be vulgar or rude or naked or anything like that. You can do that on your own on a different stage. Classes will be have no more that 10 people. You will need to register and provide payment in advance. It won't work if you don't end up coming. I hope you don't accept that you will never be able to perform onstage in public because I think you can. So come on out and try.
